a 1!
Lessons were learned with many laughs on Tuesday with the girls skiing off the Peak Chair and the boys adventuring in the back bowls across the mountain. On Wednesday, the competition began with two days of Super-G, followed by GS and SL on Friday/Saturday, and finally the dual SL on Sunday. The weather wasn’t great at the beginning, but that has to be expected in April in Whistler, and the sun came out near the end of the week for some great views and weather to race.
Overall is was a great week with both racers and coaches renewing friendships and making new connections from different provinces and beyond. Shout out to Jacob Mackey with two top tens, 9th in the first Super-G and 6th in the GS, Ryder Scott with a 10th in the GS, and Rachel Warll-Macmillan qualifying 15th for the bracket race in the Dual SL.
Special Thanks to Coaches – Tim Buchanan – Craigleith, Chris Tepera – Georgian Peaks, Shelley Johnston – Devil’s Glen
CAN AMS 2025
The Can-Am project in Tremblant has concluded, and Team Ontario 2025 utilized this opportunity to strengthen their camaraderie as teammates and increase their understanding of Ski Racing. The athletes encountered a range of challenging conditions, from freezing cold, hard-packed snow to rain-slicked surfaces. They displayed remarkable adaptability, particularly as the days schedule and contents were constantly changing. Unfortunately, persistent rain and mild temperatures made it impossible to conduct the first event which was the skills competition. Fortunately we pivoted into some team building with some laser tag and dryland games.
The subsequent day featured the Super G, where Team Ontario achieved commendable results, with the men’s top finish of 11th and the women’s top placement being 13th. The Giant Slalom provided more favorable weather and an excellent racing surface, inspiring the athletes to perform to the best of their abilities. This day not only facilitated personal growth but also broadened their perspectives on the expansive world of ski racing beyond Ontario.
The event culminated with a particularly challenging day when freezing rain overnight and an injected race surface—left over from the Senior Nationals the previous week—rendered the Slalom unfeasible. With safety concerns preventing Ski Patrol from traversing the race venue, the event regrettably had to be canceled.
The coaching staff would like to commend the athletes for their resilience amid adverse weather conditions and a dynamic schedule, which undoubtedly posed several challenges. We hope all participants had an enriching experience, forging lifelong memories and friendships. This marks merely the beginning of their journey!
Special thanks to all the Coaches! – Project Lead – Nick Bubela. Coaches: Jill Fujino, Benoit Lalonde, Matthew Pritchard, Zac Chambers, Charlie Brown, Bob Real, Mark Young, Nicole Burgess, and Fraser Turner.
