Elite athletes from all over the world will congregate at Craigleith Ski Club this weekend.

The RedTag.ca Ski Cross World Cup at the club March 14 and 15 is a Canadian qualifying event for the Olympics.

The event also ran at Craigleith two years ago, and Jeff Thompson, senior vice president of domestic programs and events with Alpine Canada, said Alpine Canada was ready to return.

“We’ve moved it here because it’s only an hour and a half from the GTA. The Niagara Escarpment…drives the excitement for the discipline of alpine skiing,” said Thompson.

“These hills are well-suited for this type of race,” he said.

Thompson said there will be athletes from 11 nations competing this year including Canada. They’ll be training on the slopes this week, with qualifiers running at the end of the week prior to the weekend events.

“It’s free for general spectators. There’s a VIP area if people are interested in that,” he said. “Anybody is welcome to attend.”

Thompson said there will be a beer garden and product sampling for any spectators to enjoy.

Races run March 14 starting at 1 p.m., and March 15 starting at 11:30 a.m.

“Canada hosts one of these events a year,” explained Thompson. “This is the only North American stop.”

In addition to parking at the club, Thompson said the Town of the Blue Mountains has granted an exemption to their no-parking rules on streets around the club for Friday and Saturday, and there will be shuttle service available.
