U14: SUPPORTING GROWTH THROUGH COMPETITION
At the U14 level, we continue to build on the foundational skills from U12 development while introducing a more competitive environment. The U14 series is designed to challenge athletes as they transition into higher levels of racing, preparing them for success in regional and provincial competition pathways.
Race Series Offerings
U14 athletes will have access to the same variety of events as U12 development, ensuring continued development across multiple disciplines:
- SL (Slalom)
- PSL (Panel Slalom)
- GS (Giant Slalom)
- Terrain Race
By participating in these events, U14 athletes further develop their technical skills, tactical awareness, and adaptability across diverse formats and terrains.
Finals Structure
The U14 finals will feature tiered finals, where athletes from different brackets compete against one another based on their team scoring results. This tiered system fosters competitive spirit while ensuring fair and balanced racing opportunities for all participants.
OCUP Finals Qualification
For U14 athletes, access to the OCUP (Ontario Cup) finals is determined through a qualifier race. This race follows a quota system, where clubs select athletes to represent them based on performance and readiness. Importantly, OCUP finals qualification is independent of team results, ensuring a fair pathway for individual athletes to progress based on merit.
U16|U18: Elevating Competition and Specialization
The U16/U18 stage is a critical phase in athlete development, where technical refinement and competitive excellence take center stage. The U16/U18 series is tailored to prepare athletes for advanced competition while maintaining alignment with LTAD principles and providing an inclusive pathway for both age groups.
Race Series Offerings
The U16/U18 race series will focus on key alpine skiing disciplines to promote skill mastery and competitive performance:
- SL (Slalom)
- GS (Giant Slalom)
Additionally, a single bracket offering Cross events will be included based on feedback from the bracket’s head coach. This ensures flexibility in meeting the specific needs of U16/U18 athletes while exposing them to diverse racing formats.
Finals Structure
U16/U18 finals will feature tiered finals, where athletes from various brackets compete based on their team scoring results. This format rewards team collaboration while allowing top athletes to test themselves against the best in their tier. By including U18 athletes in this system, the series supports a smooth transition for older athletes who are refining their skills or preparing for higher competition levels.
OCUP Finals Qualification for U16 ONLY
U16 athletes can access the OCUP (Ontario Cup) finals through a qualifier race. The club-driven quota system allows clubs to select athletes for this provincial competition, ensuring the process is athlete-centered and independent of team results. This structure provides equitable opportunities for U16 athletes to demonstrate their readiness and progress to higher levels of competition.
PATHWAY TO OCUP FINALS FOR SCUP ATHLETES
There are five spots open to each gender/age group of the OCUP Finals for any SCUP athletes who may qualify. This has been determined in various ways in the past. This year, we have chosen to create an individual race on Friday, February 14, 2025, location TBD.
It will be a GS race with two runs, and the top five athletes in the U14 and U16 age categories will be offered a spot at the OCUP Finals.
Two races will be held on the same day, in different locations, one for U14 athletes and one for U16 athletes.
The entry fee will be $55.00 per athlete.
Clubs will be given a quota based on the number of athletes per gender/per age group, which is 1:6. The quota numbers will be rounded up for those without multiples of six. (IE 9 female U14 athletes would get 2 spots, 7 or 8 female U14 athletes would only get 1 spot)
Clubs must submit athletes’ names by Wednesday, February 12th, at noon. There will be no exceptions after this day/time.
If an athlete in the top five declines their spot for the OCUP Finals, we will roll down to the maximum of 6th place.
Qualifiers will be contacted by the SOD Committee to confirm their acceptance of the allocated spot and provide details on the events being hosted in March.
