“What a great U16 mid-winter series we had here in the Collingwood area over the last five days! The event included some challenging conditions of snow, wind, poor visibility in some cases, and the odd glimpse of sun. Throughout all of these weather challenges the race crews – including many parent volunteers and AOA alumni – worked very hard to provide the best conditions possible over the 5-day event. We could not have done it without you!
Overall these conditions provided a big test for our provinces best 14 and 15-year old racers. The week was an excellent combination of racing experiences for our athletes to be able to draw upon for both the upcoming Sport Chek U16 National Championship and Mackenzie Investments OCUP Finals. We were particularly impressed with Georgian Peaks’ Ashley Campbell who won 4 out of the 5 events on the ladies side, and Craigleith’s Zach Hyland who won 3 of the 5 events – both Slalom races and one GS race.
On a more somber note, I would like to pass on our best wishes to Elizabeth Sullivan, Owen McFarlane and Alexander Day, who all unfortunately sustained varying degrees of injuries, but I’m sure will be back in the future.
We hope that the parents and coaches who attended the U16 Parent meeting at Alpine Ski Club on Friday afternoon have a better understanding of the exciting options that lay ahead for their own athletes. Please stay tuned to the U16 High Performance Program (HPP) website page in the coming days for copies of Friday’s presentation and dates you should be aware of.
Our next update on the U16s will be a direct note out to the Head Coaches and then athletes with the official announcement around the U16 Team Ontario selections headed to Sport Chek U16 Nationals. We encourage all families headed to Nationals to consider volunteering with Team AOA – we will take any and all help, so don’t be shy! Please email admin@alpineontario.local if you can pitch in.
